SODIS potential: A novel parameter to assess the suitability of solar water disinfection worldwide

چکیده
This paper studies the worldwide applicability of solar water disinfection (SODIS) technology through a novel parameter: SODIS potential. parameter is defined as inverse ratio between required exposure time to achieve four log E. coli and six hours recommended by standard protocol. The inactivation kinetics was predicted fitting results under different temperature incident radiation semi-empirical model, including synergy term bacterial stress sources (light/heat). To estimate potential, calculator developed based on Sun's position, atmospheric extinction, cloud-cover, elevation. time-varying total available at any location estimated for each day along year during sunlight hours. also from minimum maximum values, introducing its dynamic variation with water. Both values are input into kinetic model rate. Based these number batch disinfections that can reach goal 99.99% elimination in 1 daily this computed; latter finally transformed study, illustrated contours indicating potential other relevant indicators overlayed world map, confirm latitude has significant contribution highest close equator. However, highlight importance critical differences equal regions.

Health gains from solar water disinfection (SODIS): evaluation of a water quality intervention in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
In developing countries, the burden of diarrhoea is still enormous. One way to reduce transmission of pathogens is by water quality interventions. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a low-cost and simple method to improve drinking water quality on household level. This paper evaluates the implementation of SODIS in slum areas of Yaoundé, Cameroon. Promoters trained 2,911 households in the use ...
متن کاملSolar water disinfection (SODIS): a review from bench-top to roof-top.
Solar water disinfection (SODIS) has been known for more than 30 years. The technique consists of placing water into transparent plastic or glass containers (normally 2L PET beverage bottles) which are then exposed to the sun. Exposure times vary from 6 to depending on the intensity of sunlight and sensitivity of the pathogens. Its germicidal effect is based on the combined effect of thermal he...
متن کاملEffectiveness of solar disinfection (SODIS) in rural coastal Bangladesh.
Scarcity of drinking water in the coastal area of Bangladesh compels the inhabitants to be highly dependent on alternative water supply options like rainwater harvesting system (RWHS), pond sand filter (PSF), and rain-feed ponds. Susceptibility of these alternative water supply options to microbial contamination demands a low-cost water treatment technology. This study evaluates the effectivene...
متن کاملCommunity challenges when using large plastic bottles for Solar Energy Disinfection of Water (SODIS)
BACKGROUND Communities living in developing countries as well as populations affected by natural or man-made disasters can be left at great risk from water related diseases, especially those spread through the faecal-oral route. Conventional water treatments such as boiling and chlorination can be effective but may prove costly for impoverished communities. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) has ...
متن کاملSolar water disinfection (SODIS): Impact on hepatitis A virus and on a human Norovirus surrogate under natural solar conditions.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of solar water disinfection (SODIS) in the reduction and inactivation of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and of the human Norovirus surrogate, murine Norovirus (MNV-1), under natural solar conditions. Experiments were performed in 330 ml polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles containing HAV or MNV-1 contaminated waters (10(3) PFU/ml) that were exposed to natural...
